Albania reported a higher number of asylum requests. Compared to 307 requests in 2017, until August 2018 they have issued 3000.
The information was published by the UNHCR representative, Pablo Zapata.
EU sources in Tirana said that this phenomenon is an abuse with the asylum system. The Interior Ministry said that they have no more than 500 true asylum seekers, whose applications are being reviewed.
The Albanian authorities fear that the hardened European policies on asylum will complicate the situation of those that are currently residing in Albania, according to AFP.
“Albania doesn’t have the capacity to welcome a high number of asylum seekers and offer them services with EU standards”, said Deputy Minister Rovena Voda, who appeals for more help from the EU.
