The newly elected President of the European Commission, Ursula Van Der Leyen, could be a good advocate of opening the EU accession negotiations for Albania and Northern Macedonia.
Der Leyen said in an interview for Der Spiegel that the procedures for these two Western Balkan countries must be opened the soonest possible.
“We must open the EU accession negotiations for Albania and Northern Macedonia as soon as the European Council reaches a decision that the criteria were met. We must give our hand to these two states. We share the same continent, we are neighbors. If we close our doors to this region we only hurt ourselves”, she said.
